本書是在作者博士學位論文《中國英語學習者中介語書面敘事語篇時序性的橫斷研究》的基礎上撰寫而成的。全書共分六章：第一章為引言，介紹了研究的背景、意義及價值；第二章為文獻綜述，從英語學習者敘事能力、時序性習得和對比修辭三個方面對相關理論進行了總結(jié)和論述；第三章為研究方法，介紹了研究理論的框架及相關數(shù)據(jù)的搜集和分析方法；第四章通過對中國英語學習者英漢敘事語篇的文本描述和分析，探討了其時序表達的特點及影響因素；第五章提出了五個方面的教學建議；第六章為結(jié)論和啟示，總結(jié)了研究成果、局限性和未來研究方向。
本書以初中、高中、大學的英語學習者為研究群體，考察他們在英漢書面敘事語篇里時序性的表達運用情況。本研究主要以Kruistum（2006），Masuda（2002）和Meyerson（1997）的分類及敘事框架為理論依據(jù)，將外語學習者敘事文本的時序結(jié)構(gòu)分為微觀層次、中間層次和宏觀層次，探討他們分別在英漢文本中時序表達的橫向發(fā)展特征，并且采用多學科的、定性與定量相結(jié)合的研究方法，全面考察英語學習者時序性語言表達和外語敘事能力的關系，同時也涉及到母語漢語敘事語篇能力對英語敘事寫作的直接和間接影響。
