實驗粒子物理學家。中國科學技術大學教授。1988年在中國科學技術大學獲博士學位。此后在中科院高能物理研究所、瑞士聯邦蘇黎世高等工業大學（ETHZ）做博士后和研究助理。1997年受聘中科院百人計劃，任中科院高能物理研究所北京譜儀量能器組組長，物理一室主任，北京譜儀實驗負責人。2001年至2008年在美國密歇根大學做訪問教授和研究員，從事強子對撞機上的D0和ATLAS實驗。2008年入選中組部****，任中國科學技術大學教授。主要從事大型強子對碰機上的ATLAS實驗和北京正負電子對碰機上的北京譜儀實驗。研究興趣為Higgs粒子的性質與新物理尋找。

長期從事粒子物理實驗研究，在探測器研制、建造、運行，物理分析以及組織領導大型國際合作方面有豐富的經驗。在ETHZ工作期間，與合作者建造了特殊結構的彎晶譜儀，精確測量了奇異π氫、π氘原子因強相互作用引起的基態能級的偏移并首次觀測到其譜線展寬。結果對確定π-核子系統的耦合常數，檢驗和發展手征微擾理論至關重要。通過對飛行π介子束的測量，否定了KARMEN實驗報道的發現重中性粒子的結果。在北京譜儀上直接領導和主持進行了2-5GeV能區R值的精確測量，其結果對由弱電數據間接尋找Higgs粒子及其質量擬合以及精確檢驗標準模型起到極其重要的作用，并受到國際高能物理界的高度贊賞和重視；R值的結果被國際粒子數據手冊收錄且被寫入教科書。在大型強子對碰機上的ATLAS實驗中，為精密繆子譜儀的建造做出了重要貢獻,并對雙玻色子物理及Higgs粒子的發現做出了直接貢獻。

1998年入選國家基金委杰出青年。2001年獲中國科學院杰出青年科學家獎，2003年獲北京市科學技術一等獎，2005年獲國家自然科學二等獎，2014年獲何梁何利物理學獎。2012年入選美國物理學會會士。2013年入選中國科學院院士。

Majorprogressachievedare(1)precisionmeasurementofthestrongenergyshiftandbroadeningofthegroundstateofthepionichydrogenanddeuterium;(2)searchfortheheavyneutralparticlefromthepiondecaysinflight;(3)measurementofthetotalhadronproductioncrosssectionofthee+e-annihilationintheenergyregionbetween2and5GeV;(4)constructionofthepositionmonitoringdrifttubechamberoftheMuonSpectrometeroftheATLASdetector,andphysicswithdiboson,includingmeasurementoftheproductioncrosssectionoftheWW,ZZ,searchforHiggsanddarkmatterfromWWandZZfinalstates.
